I've been told that steel shipping containers are waterproof, and may be used for root cellars, storm shelters, and perhaps even basements and living quarters, as well as the more well-known above-ground dwellings, of which I've seen several examples.  What is Mr. Oehler's opinion of underground use of shipping containers?  Would they float up if the water table rose too high?

I'm not Mike, but have had this discussion a couple of times elsewhere -- shipping containers require reinforcement if they are to be used underground.  When stacked, the contact points are at the corners, so that is where the strength is.  If they aren't reinforced on the sides and tops before being buried, they will collapse.

And yes, a buried shipping container will float if the water table gets too high, just like an empty septic tank will.

They are good for above-ground use, though, especially if you use the ones constructed for ocean transport -- some are built for continental use only and these will rust out, but the ocean-going containers are built to resist rust.
