Our land has areas that are fairly rich in clay content and I was thinking about trying to fire my own clay roofing tiles. What I'm not sure about is 1) is this practical/possible, and 2) what sort of additives/stabilizers might be necessary. Thoughts?

It is very doable...but a great deal of work!!!

To test the type of clay and the labor involved, fined a local potter or ceramics class and learn how to "process raw clay." There is a enough on the internet to learn this well. Then fire test tiles and other shapes for the clays characteristics, handling features and durability.

Good luck...It is fun but lots of work...

Once again, Jay, thank you for the response! I'm thinking I might have to add your email address into my contact list. It's great to see someone with so much knowledge and experience that is so willing to extend a helping hand.
