fungi? does anyone know what these are?

I stepped on the wood mulch on my flowerbed yesterday and a whole bunch of liquid oozed up over my shoe. I went out today to see what was there and to get rid of it before my dogs or cat could get near it. This is what I found. There was a sort of pinkish skin around these, that came off as I moved the mulch off of them. They are in size from a walnut to a large chestnut size. When I tried to break one open, they were quite tough to break apart. The inner part seems to pop loose. There is tan slimy color to the outside, then gray and then a much lighter color. I am just wondering what this is? I did not touch it with my hands and washed well after just in case. Thank you for any help you can offer.

To be honest, fungi is one subject that I know next to ZERO about.
(Other than don't eat it unless you know for certain.)

Your description, plus images tell me "Don't touch". Yikes.

My mom found something called "Stinkhorn" mushroom on the web- I think perhaps these were the 'eggs'. And no worries- no plans to eat them!
