We are having a 60 degree day warm spell in december. My hazelnut seed planted in nursery beds is beginning to sprout. They have not even experienced their 90 day "required" cold stratification.
Will these sprouts die or go dormant once winter settles in again?
I've got a sneaking suspicion that they'll likely die unless you do something to help them out. You might look at digging them up and bringing them into a sheltered area.
Hazelnuts have been doing this sprouting thing for millions of years. They got it down and know what they are doing. If you go find a mature hazelnut tree, I bet you'll find that they are already flowering... They are a very cold hardy species.
Thanks for the replies!! I have left some in the ground, and I have dug some up and put them in the greenhouse. We will see how it goes! I will try and post back here in spring.
