Would it also mean that if these became widespread, plastics would last less long in soil contact applications?

That would also be my interpretation. I think that plastics have some valuable material properties. Having some materials that are quickly biodegradable, and others that last different time periods will be useful not only for businesses, but also for the environment. I believe that people will pay extra for the benefit of contributing to a better world, especially when they realize that many people in their families have had cancer and plastics in our bloodstreams are a major contributor to it.
