using current septic system to generate biogas

I am wondering if anyone has experimented with capping off their septic system with a valve system to allow methane release for use in powering heating and generating systems. I am in a semi rural area, and I have a septic tank and it is vented with a two inch pipe. Can this be converted to use the methane?
