Strange new, inch long bug in my kitchen.

Sorry about it being squished, but when one suddenly is pelted by a large flying thing, one does tend to panic.

Saw it, or one very much like it, in the garden yesterday. It's not in our bug books, so I thought maybe the people at permies.com might know. What is it? Why is it so big? Why must it fly at us so?

WOW! The people at bugguide are incredible. They identified it and got back to me in about 5 minutes.

Chalcophora. (Western Sculptured Pine Borer - most likely)

Apparently it wasn't attacking, it "mistook me for a tree".
