I found a very old book, available in print or for free online. It's called Buffalobird Woman's Garden. It was written in the 1930s by an old Hidatsa Indian woman who actually remembered gardening before her tribe was placed on a reservation. She continued to garden the old way for many years even after being placed on the reservation.
