Looking For Goumi Sources in the Great Lakes or Easter Seaboard Region

I can't find sources of this plant in Canada, and have found a few nurseries in the U.S. that will ship to the states but they are in Oregon which is on the other side of the continent from where I'm at here in Ontario.

Do any of you know of nurseries carrying Goumi located in Canada or the eastern States who ship to Canada?

I doubt that you'll find any US nursery will ship to Canada because of the necessity of obtaining a phytosanitary certificate.  Even then,  the plant still has to clear through which raises the risk of a DOA plant.

In Canada?  No one that I've been able to find, not even Green Barn in Montreal or Solana Seeds.   I did find a seed seller last year - Tradewind Fruits who carried it and got seeds.  They don't list it this year in their catalogue.  And there's Rich Farm Garden where you can get seeds.  Lee Reich has some information on seed germination.

If you're interested in Autumn Olive, let me know.  We stumbled across a number of trees on the south side of Rice Lake and harvested a large amount for jelly.  We will have some berries frozen awaiting processing.  Given the number of trees that we found, I don't think that germination is a problem.  We weren't looking for small trees to dig up but I'm sure there are plenty.

Another option is to find someone who is willing to ship you cuttings and have a go at propagation that way.  I got lucky and got 1 out of 16 cuttings to take.  I have no idea what variety of goumi I have but I don't care.

i didnt see any places in canada.  closest i saw for goumi was a nursery in Tennessee.  several places sell seeds as well.  you might also consider the joining seed savers or checking their forum not sure how many canadians there are though.

Thanks for the leads everyone. Looking into this plant initially I found sources saying it wasn't invasive but new information has come to light and I'm told that it spreads like crazy. Yes they apparently produce good tasting berries and fix nitrogen but what if I plant a bunch of them here, they spread through my region, and cause some unforseen problems in the ecosystem. I'm sure the first person to bring European Buckthorn into Ontario had no idea of the havoc they would unleash.

There's a fair bit of confusion about about Elaeagnus.  The USDA lists the various varieties and their invasive characteristics.

Autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is on the list but from what I saw at Rice Lake it's not in the league of European Buckthorn.  It's not even close.  Perhaps hardiness zone comes into play.  Also, whether it's filling a man-made vacuum in the natural landscape.

I'd be planting it into an old hay field that's been tilled up in the last few years but not planted. The soil is sandy and seems lacking in nutrients. At least nitrogen. I fear that this would be a near perfect scenario for goumi to go forth and multiply.

Goumi or eleagnus multiflora is not invasive.

Impossible to say how long the autumn olive has been there.  It's growing in quite sandy soil so that may slow it down.  The Buckthorn that is there though is something else.  I've never seen it as bad - hedgerows 30-40 feet wide and hundreds of feet long. 

How long have your Goumi been planted Mike?

The buckthorn scenario you describe is exactly what we have on our farm. Every hedgerow is full of them, and they have moved into the shady understory of the forest edges in a big way. Only dogwood seems to be able to keep pace.
