Hi, ManitouDesigns. Just out of curiosity, would you happen to be the person who, several months back, wrote to Countryside magazine in search of like-minded homesteaders in mid-Missouri?
We would be glad to talk to talk with you in-depth about our operation, though I wouldn’t characterize it as all that family-friendly. Currently, there are only two of us here; our third returned to the suburbs a few years back to start a family with his significant other. Each of us has raised a family and worked mainstream jobs in the past but have always found ourselves at ideological odds with nearly everyone around us. We work in town 8 hours/week to cover outside expenses and carry neither medical insurance nor life insurance, so there is little in the way of financial security here. We live constantly mindful of the suffering in the world, of global and domestic poverty, and of the principle of impermanence, and have both studied and practiced Buddhism for many years, though our practice is unorthodox.
As for our surroundings, we are situated on about 25 acres of mostly wooded rugged terrain bisected by an intermittent stream. The topography presents huge challenges in terms of fencing our gardens and livestock and transporting the firewood we use to heat our place in the winter. OTOH, our goats and pigs, when allowed free run of the place, find plenty to forage on and help us keep the “jungle” at bay with minimal use of brush hogging or mowing. The manure they produce when they are more closely confined at night and during inclement weather is composted and used in our veggie garden.
Sadly, we are not yet off-grid. That is a goal we are working towards, and maybe now that solar technology is coming down in price, we will someday be able to produce our own electricity.
