For the last 15 years about 1/4 acre of my yard around my new house, has been fenced in and used as a dog yard. Now, I know I have alot of extra nitrogen from all the dog poo. I have no dog and I'm taking up the old fence. My question is this...What are a few good first steps to "even out" the soil in this yard. The location is North Carolina near the ocean so the soil is a bit sandy. I'm not looking for a lush lawn. As a matter of fact, I'm getting rid of most of the grass in favor of furit and flowers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would let the lawn grow out enough to be able to see the spots of tall grass.  Then I would come around with a bucket of organic fertilizer and toss it around where the grass is shorter.  I might do this every two weeks or so.

I like you because you always keep good, crunchy cereal in your pantry. This tiny ad agrees:
