Summary
Paul Wheaton and
Alan Booker intend to do a page by page review of
Bill Mollison's
Permaculture - a designers manual, the official textbook used in a
permaculture design course (
PDC), also known as the
Big Black Book. This is not intended to be a
PDC via podcast and it is assumed that listeners already have a knowledge of permaculure. Paul points out that there is no legitimate e-book version of the book and out of respect to Bill Mollison urges all listeners to forgo pirated copies. He would like to persuade Tarari to release a legal e-book version and asks if anyone has a contact.
PREFACE
Mollison wants to provide a solution, a framework, for people to actually solve stuff themselves -
'positive direction forward'. Are you growing a garden? Do that first. Most people are dependent on systems of civilisation. We need to shift from consumption to production. Do you use natural gas but oppose fracking? Does minimising demand mean being cold? Paul's own book gives a path where you can also be comfortable. Smart-phone use drove battery design by changing people's demands. Luxury, not need, drives the market. Send the signals that market demand is changing.
Mollison worked with
David Holmgren to develop
permaculture. Holmgren has a different flavor to Mollison. Paul doesn't understand his writing as well as he understands Mollison's, but many people prefer his stuff. Mollison is
'action and applied'. David is
'sit back and observe, be slow, careful and methodical'. Alan prefers each at different times according to his mood, while Paul prefers Mollison, though he supports Holmgren 100%.
