Summary
Paul Wheaton and
Alan Booker continue their review and discussion of the big black book,
Bill Mollison's Permaculture - a designers' manual.
PREFACE (continued)
Holzer vs Holmgren
permaculture. Holmgren's top-down approach uses ethics and principles to develop techniques to solve problems to save the world. Holzer's bottom-up approach develops techniques to
profit from
land, saving the world in the process. The two approaches are complementary. Good designers use both simultaneously. There is no
one true way or
official permaculture position on things. No-one can point a finger and say
that's not permaculture. Nobody is in charge.
r/K species selection theory. r - weedy, opportunistic. K - creates structure for long term survival, like a tree. Modern design process is K - too much
canopy, taking too many resources. Permaculture is r - gets established in a crisis, develops rapidly, iterates. Needs to get its DNA into the dominant
trees and displace bad design practice. We need a diversity of thought and approaches. Bill studied a vast range of material and distilled the best into permaculture, including Yoeman's keyline ideas. Bill would award an applied diploma after two years' work. Paul currently awards an acre of land after two years in bootcamp. He would like to contact anyone who has a diploma from Bill.
Originally permaculutre meant
permanent agriculture.
David Holmgren helped Bill develop the concept from agriculture though other systems towards all culture. It requires a symbiotic relationship with nature, but we also need huge zone fives, to be left wild. Permies create symphonies is seed and soil. Alan discusses Integrative Regenerative Design.
