Just thought this to be a good place to get started.
I'm in the process of trying to start a small relatively self sustaining community on the Western slope of the Ecuadoran Andes at around 4000 ft. ASL.
It's pretty much an over grown tree plantation right now but I'm planning to develop it as a food producing Libertarian Community. I hope to attract self sufficient couples and families to either prepare for the future or go there now. I have a bit more than 75 acres and I plan to build homes on individual half hectare properties with shared utilities. There is electricity available at the sight. Irt is unreliable but I havfe an old Petter two lung Diesel 5KW generator plant. there is a river that enters the property on the south side, curves and leaves at the North border, reenters a little farther downstream and eventually exits at the NE corner of the Eastern Parcel. There will bee a paved road installed through the property in the next year or so. There is a 50 Megawatt power station being installed a few miles north of the property. I intend to build hydraulic ram pumps that will be supplied with water by a stream just outside the Western border of the Western parcel. The Neighbor and I have an agreement for me to install the pumps. The river, on the other hand, is 700 meters to the east of the road. It is 20 to 40 meters wide at different places, runs at 1 meter per second and is about 1 to 2 meters deep. both the stream and the river and have been for many years all year round. In the future I hope to drill a deep well with a jet pmp for water. The off site stream originates on the neighbor's property. There is also at least one stream originating on the property where the first homes will be built. The river head from first entry to second exit is said to be about 20 meters. Fully dammed that would be a multi megawatt plant. But th e power company is very closely tied to the government and they don't mind if you go up to 50KW. Above that they want their cut. <G>
My concept is to sell off half hectare lots with or without outside walls divided into two parts; the end nearer a road will be the home site and the area behind will be productive food.
I'm looking into every alternative enerrgy source I can find and would love suggestions on things like pyrolysis.
AS far as skill sets from resident owners I would like to find an elementary school teacher and a medical professional . I am in communication with Hesperian and Echo foundations for sanitation and health inforrmation where medical care and building codes are not existing. The great thing here is that there are no taxes on food grown here. You grow it, you pick it , you take it to the mercado and you sell it. Then you double (fold in half) your money and put it in your pocket. Home assistance an d gardeners are relatively inexpensive here. I am thinking about any number of auxiliary businesses. Perhaps the most expensive will be buying shipping containers from teeh Dam project and converting them to homes or apartment or barracks for work crews or per packaged emergency shelters complete with food supplies for a time period. They would be set up on a water, power and waste buss that would allow rapid multi unit construction.
Thanks to anyone for any hints on how to better present this. I am starting to clear land within 60 days.
Then I will begin growing varieties of foods that are more nutritious than the current local diet. Since this is a community development I intend to supply the workers with clean water and better food. A sick, undernourished person can neither learn nor work well. It is in everyone's best interest to help.
One last thing - you gotta LOVE dogs. I have 5 all adoptions or rescues of one sort or another. There is a Quito Street dog rescue, A local pup who just showed up one night just when I needed a friend, two Goldens and a Shepherd mix. They are all inside dogs.<G> anyone got a good idea on how to get dog hair out of the carpet? <G> Wouldn't work here.
Bamboo culture is another option. Guadua grows wild here. properly cured the stuff is as strong and just as durable as structural steel.
Love the name. I'd be interested in an update, and perhaps the name of a community or landmark that I could search on GoogleMaps.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
