Hello SW Montanans.

My name is Tate and I am moving to Bozeman next June. Since this Missoula forum is the closest thing to that part of the state I thought it would be a good place to post this question.

I want to convert a stretch of asphalt/concrete paving into native forage using only livestock (maybe a hint of machinery, but primarily herbivorous ungulates).

So, I am looking for somebody with an abandoned parking lot, paved road, network of sidewalks, or biggest and baddest an airplane tarmack!

The idea is to break up the paving with hoof action of the animals and possibly a bit of chipping from machinery just to get the process started. Let the freeze thaw cycle do some work on it to get the paving broke up even more.
This will allow for common paving weeds to infiltrate, and these will be grazed. Through high stock densities and rotational grazing (which means more pounds of livestock/sq ft) the paving will continue to be broken down. After this treatment continues the chunks of broken paving will be essentially "piled" by the livestock kicking it around. This piling will increase point water flow to plants, and create a heat source as well. Eventually, after grazing outside the treatment area and then inside, native seeds will be introduced through animal and other movement.

I would really like this dream of mine to be fulfilled so if anyone has suggestions on a possible location to maybe do something like this that would be awesome!!!

I know, not really in line with this section of the forum and its a super off the wall idea.

Thanks though and I look forward to your ideas!!

It is an experimental device that will make my mind that most powerful force on earth! More powerful than this tiny ad!
