Emergency Rabbit Shelter

I have found a source for rabbits at six dollars a piece.  The only problem is that he wants to get rid of them now and I don't have a place for them yet.

I do have a chain link dog pen about 8sqft x 6ft tall, and some sheets of salvaged tin along with some more chain link fence.  I thought that if I put tin around the sides and across the top, and chain link fence lying across the bottom that this might work for the few weeks it takes to get a proper rabbitry built.

I don't have hay or straw to put in the bottom, but I do have plenty of leaves.

I there an problem with this idea?

It should be fine, but I'll add a couple of things -

1. you'll want to secure, using bendable wire, the sides to the bottom chain link - rabbits are diggers and chewers.  Or maybe secure this seem in some other way that would work to hold your metal in place too.

2. add a lot of leaves as they like to burrow and create their own habitat for warmth.  They will pick one place, usually at the back, and make it a 'potty area'.  If you can put down newspaper or saw dust for absorbancy they will use it. 

3. you should supplement their food stuffs with timothy hay or other non-pellet materials such as maple leaves, sunflowers (whole plant).  It helps their overall health and yours if your eating them.

are they big enough to go straight to the freezer

even if they were smallish if each dressed out to three pounds thats a good deal on some tasty

Thanks Jami, I will have to find a source of alfalfa hay.  There are huge fields of kudzu less than half a mile
from here, I plan on feeding that along with the pellets.

Brice, they are big enough to go into the freezer, but I want them for breeding.  A continuous source of
protein.

I plan on building something proper next weekend, just have to keep them healthy until then.
