I have a 12' x 12' hoop-style greenhouse, and am interested in building a Rocket Stove Mass Heater for it (not to make it a hot house - just to try to keep things from freezing during cold spells). I've seen a number of videos of people building a RSMH for their greenhouse, but nothing about how the finished product works (or doesn't, as the case may be). I'd like to know if anyone has any first hand experience to share. Is this technology effective for this application?

Hi

Yes they work !

I posted some photos and videos of mine during construction. I have to say that despite effectively all the heat being taken up by the mass bench and raised beds (the exhaust temperature is really low) the soil temperature and bench temperature, at the surface, has hardly risen. Still early days and the bench hasn't dried out yet.

the overnight temperature has stabilised already tho so the heat sink thing is obviously working - I havent insulated the greenhouse as yet but think I will need to in order to really advance/prolong the growing season.

The greenhouse is 10' x 17' and 7'6" high and homemade

Things I wish I'd done differently !!

Make a removable clean out base to the feed tube/burn area - saves scooping out ash by hand
have the feed tube outside so it doesn't take warm air from the greenhouse
make it a 6" system rather than a 5" system
built it years ago cos its the best thing ever !!!
