There is one there, but it says zero bytes.

I went to the old stuff. It is also zero bytes.

I searched my hardrive and i don't have a copy.

I'm looking at the site at the old host and I don't see faviocon.ico anywhere.

Do you have a copy?

I think it is there. do you see it now?

I loaded chrome and was able to see it. i think firefox does some caching.

One of my computers is behaving strangely then. The other one shows it.

I thought it was a tree, not carrots. My 82 yr old eyes are to blame I imagine.

It didn't come up for me until I did some tinkering and bounced firefox. So I think it might be a while until it shows up consistently for everybody.

Hun... I don't see it yet in FF 8.0 nor IE, but I'll do some testing tomorrow and cross my fingers.

my laptop:
IE9 I see it
Chrome 16 I see it
Firefox 9 still nothing, even after a cold system restart

My desktop:
I see it in all three of the same browsers.
Puzzling

When looking at the page source I don't see the meta tag referencing it

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="https://permies.com/favicon.ico">

This could be part of it.... there are a couple of ways to reference the .ico, usually best to use them all and cover all the bases.

It is not in the address bar but where I have created a bookmark on the bookmark bar in chrome the carrots are there

So chrome found it, but is somehow deciding to use it only in some places.

That could be because on the first try, it was .... flawed. And it cached the flawed version.

I probably don't know what a favicon is or looks like. I'm running Firefox browser, there is a stylized farmer in bibs holding some carrots in the upper left corner. Nothing in the address bar or tab.
