Introducing a rooster to commercial layers

Hello everyone

I have two roosters in my backyard flock and I also have 10 commercial Rhodes island layers. My question is if I introduce my two rooster to my commercial layer coup, will the Rhodes island hens lay fertile eggs that I can successfully incubate and hatch?

Hi Laurel, welcome to Permies.

Yes, they will almost definitely do some mating and make fertile eggs, but it might take several weeks of integration before everyone is friends enough for this to happen.  Adding new birds to the flock whether male or female will result in a lot of upheaval and maybe fighting, so give them plenty of time (and lots of space too, so hopefully no one is hurt) before expecting regular fertile eggs.  

I would suggest, however, that you only introduce one rooster to a flock that size, as two is much more likely to cause problems, either by fighting each other or overmating and stressing the hens.  Good luck.
