Hi all, I have a very mature holly oak, canopy appears totally healthy. Bark on trunk is easily peeled off in spots revealing a exoskeleton of a spider like creature as well as a fine spiderweb UNDER the bark. Can anyone help identify the bug or treatment?

Hello Jp,

The Bug, or should I say remnants of the Arachnid, was a spider. Spiders will sometimes hibernate and or live in the cork layer of tree barks, that are dimensional enough to provide such intricate habitats. It doesn't harm the tree, and there presents can actually help eliminate some insects that could be a potential pest. The spacific Arachnid species, I couldn't name, yet I can say the remedy is do nothing, except maybe to stop pulling off the cork bark layer prematurely, as that layer provides habit, while it also protects the tree from numerous potential hazards which can occur in nature.

I agree. Here's the link: http://stoves2.com
