Hi, Thanks for the comment. Larger saws will have the bleed button that you describe - these buttons (or valves) are designed to make the cord easier to pull and automatically close when the engine fires. I can safely say that if the button is not pressed, it would not damage the puller unit. I don't believe forgetting to push the button would damage the saw as the valve automatically closes when the engine fires. I guess if the cord is old or frayed, then if the button is not closed the cord may break when the engine is being started.
