grass? permaculture is not keen on lawn but isn't it sometimes a practical option? anyone have another solution for a tough, evergreen ground cover???

Yes permaculture is not a huge fan of lawns. Permaculture is not a big fan of monoculture. Maybe the better choice for your dog is more like a meadow. You have some different types of grasses, some weeds, throw in a shrub here and there.
