There’s a severe dieback of pine trees in our area this year. Everyone I’ve spoken with-extension office, FSA office etc said there’s a fungus going around so I accepted that. Some of my Ponderosa’s were healthy this Spring and almost needle-less and coneless now. With future huglekulture and new light space in mind, we cut one down today. Here is what I found in the few remaining cones, all near the top of the tree. Are these insects what are decimating the trees or just something that happens that I don’t notice when things are healthy? And what came out of this larvae casing? Thank you in advance.
