This was a cool thing to watch. A gin pole gives you extra height and leverage when you are working up higher than the reach of your bucket.

One of our favorite workshops to teach is the Permies.com Appropriate Technology Course (now the Permaculture Technology Jamboree) just after the Permaculture Design Course every summer at Paul Wheaton Labs in beautiful Montana. Stay tuned as we share clips from previous years to give you an idea of what is coming up.

The purposes of the PTJ are:
1) Participants gain hands-on practice in a fully outfitted homestead fabrication and repair shop with tools from welders to sawmills to excavators under the instruction of experienced teachers--think of it as a shop class for homesteaders.
2) The PTJ is a serious research & development forum for DIY low-impact technologies such as Rocket Mass Heaters, Thermal and Photovoltaic Solar, and Local Natural Materials Building. Participants help us push the envelope on what is possible with appropriate technology.

Say, that looked really familiar! I think I need to wear something other than beige on beige next time, if I passed out and fell on some dirt or sand, you'd never find me. I'm looking forward to being there this summer to build some more awesome things!

The gin pole setup worked really well, and I'd also like to one day work with a log arch and then a tripod with block and tackle setup for lifting logs as well, for those who don't have access to a tractor with a loader.
