Tap rooted fodder trees?

Any ideas on tap rooted fodder trees for zone 7?  I looking for something that will not compete with grass much near the soil surface and mine nutrients from deep in the soil.

Gray, I would think honey locust or black locust.  A bonus is that they are nitrogen fixers!

I don't know about the honey locust but my black locust have the most surface roots of anything I have!
