In which we start making cob for our oven from the local clay soil using that most renewable of resources: child labor.

It's been a long day but our cob oven is looking great. The sun provided all of the electricity we needed for our mixer. It didn't rain. What more could you want? Pizza'? Well that will have to wait for the oven to dry out. It has been so humid here that we are going to have to wait until next weekend to pull out the sand form and fire her up. Don't worry, we made pizza on the rocket stove.

Tiny House Village:

Christopher Alexander's book "A Pattern Language" is a collection of observations about ways humans have tended to live historically. Often these tendencies are at odds with industrial development. The Tiny House Village at Bending Oak is built along traditional patterns that cluster living spaces in such a way that there are private spaces and community spaces, working spaces and rest spaces with easy access to each other, but with a sense of being their own little worlds.

Uncle Mud at Bending Oak Permaculture Farm: Full Tour
One of the hidden jewels of Youngstown Ohio, ten years ago Bending Oak Permaculture Farm was a barren waste that had been clearcut for a subdivison then abandoned when the housing market crashed. It has been rebirthed as a community demonstration farm showcasing regenerative farming and living systems such as a food forest, ponds, wild rice paddies, solar electric, a tinyhouse village, composting toilets, rainwater harvesting, and a barn made from repurposed shipping containers.

We just finished building a cob oven with these lovely folks. We lare looking forward to helping build a cob rocket stove and outdoor kitchen next month, then maybe some cob cottages back in the woods. Watch for more at https://www.unclemud.com and https://bendingoak.com/all-events/

Uncle Mud at Bending Oak Permaculture Farm: Removing the Sand Mold from the Cob Oven Part 1
A week after building our earthen oven we are back to remove the sand mold. Hopefully the cob is dried enough that it will stay in its eggshell form rather than sagging.  It has ben very humid this week so we shall see how much the cob has dried. Will there be Pizza tonight? Stay Tuned

Uncle Mud at Bending Oak Permaculture Farm: Removing the Sand Mold from the Cob Oven Part 2
Sometimes our helpers get downright competitive. Who knows, they might even have to take turns. The cob has had a week to dry so we are carefully removing the sand that was holding it up, then we will fire up the oven and make some pizza.

September 26 2021 we will be back here in Youngstown Ohio to add an outdoor kitchen and a double burner rocket stove to the farm. Join us if you can!
