Hog moat?!

I have heard of a 'Chicken Moat' built around a garden. This involves having your chicken run surround your garden so crawly bugs have to go through chicken feeding grounds get to your tomatoes. In which case they are hopefully eaten by the chickens.

Would a similar concept work well to keep predator animals out of your chicken paddocks.
I was thinking of designing hog paddocks so they nearly or completely surround the chicken paddocks.
Smaller predatory animals would then have to travel through hog territory to get to the birds.

Thoughts? Do pigs even care?

Our pigs don't eat the chickens, and they didn't bother the baby skunks who were hanging around. We had a sow who chased off something that threatened her little piglets, but we never did figure out exactly what it was. Two of our sheep got taken by a cougar this spring, and the pigs were sharing the paddock. In fact, the pigs cleaned up the carcasses down to the bones. I wouldn't count on pigs as guard animals.

Hmm... Interesting thought. We sort of have that. We have about 70 acres of pasture where we graze our pigs. In the middle of that is the area our chickens free-range - they follow the pigs naturally within the inner areas but don't go more than about 1,000' out. Our livestock guardian and herding dogs keep the predators out, or eat them, and the livestock in. Within the center ring is our home. Think of it as a three ring circus.
