Hi all
Has anyone got any good ideas on joining short, fat, fast tapering juniper logs to posts for a post and beam building? My posts taper from 10 ~12 inches at the base to 3-1/2 inches at the top. Would tongue and groove weaken the 3-1/2 inch end too much???

I am not sure I understand your question though it seems to me that tongue and groove would work, especially if you used metal braces.

Maybe another of our forum members will chime in with the answer.

I can't picture the exact joint you might want either (column@floor, top of column, siding, rafters, etc.) ... perhaps a sketch of what you're after?

Ben Law's books might help: https://ben-law.co.uk/

 - book and DVD "Roundwood timber framing"
 - one of his butterpat joints:  https://www.permaculture.co.uk/articles/how-make-butterpat-joint

Joint types:

 - https://www.newenglandbarn.com/glossary

Tons of info out there on "timber frame" joints, but hardly anything on "roundwood", "log", or "post-and-beam" joints ... may have to take timber frame joints and translate them to roundwood joints yourself.

Hope this helps ...

Check out Mr Chickadee on you tube. He is doing some awesome post and beam stuff, and Korean traditional post and beam construction. He might have the joint you want.
