I'm a professional photographer, originally from Canada, but I've lived and worked in West Africa for the past 7 years.
I recently discovered
permaculture and the transition towns movement, and completed a
PDC in France last month with Robyn Francis. I was very inspired by the training, and by the community I discovered, and I feel like before I settle down somewhere and start doing my own thing, I'd like to try and share that inspiration, so I'm embarking on a personal
project to document initiatives in
sustainable living that are taking place around the world. My objective is to create a documentary film that will show that individuals and communities are already at work building a better future, with simple techniques and initiatives that really work, initiatives that are within everyone's reach. Peak oil and
climate change are worrying prospects for all of us, but many people feel like there is little they can do, they feel like
local, personal actions have no power in changing the world. This documentary film will inspire them to take action, by showing them that normal people, people like them, are already doing it, and are being successful.
I am looking for stories of communities and individuals of all ages, living in all types of climates, in all parts of the world, in rural or urban areas. My goal is to show that whoever you are, wherever you live, you can do something. I'd like the film to focus principally on individuals who don't necessarily come from an agricultural or activism background, so that anyone will be able to identify to them as they watch the movie. I want to get people excited, inspired, I want them to think "this could be me".
I'm not necessarily looking for people who are living off the grid, or who are 100% self-sufficient, I'm looking for real, simple, change that works, and I'm not limiting myself to "permaculture" per say, although I imagine most of it will be related to it.
I'm in Senegal at the moment, but I'm not planning to focus much of this work on Africa. I'll be in the Philippines for a few weeks in November, and I'm looking for projects there to start. Then I'll be in Canada and the U.S. early next year, and from there it could anywhere depending on funding. My objective is to look at different projects in Canada, US, Latin America, Europe and Asia. Ideas and suggestions are much welcome.
