Hello to everyone reading this. This is only our second year raising ducks and we just noticed something going on with our young Peking drake’s bill (he’s just under 1 year).

See picture attached. It almost looks bruised, the smaller patch on one side feels soft.

It’s been extremely cold here in the northeast, temps down in single digits for an extended time. We fortified their coop with hay to insulate the walls & two heat lamps.

Could this be frostbite? Or rubber bill? Or ?

Appreciate any thoughts.

Hello Michelle and welcome to Permies! Sorry your drake is having beak problems. First, let me say I don't know much about ducks. I'm mostly trying to bump this so someone more knowledgeable sees it and hopefully can help. I would agree the one side does look like a bruise, no idea about the soft spot. Has it changed at all since you first noticed it? Any other symptoms? Could he have gotten into a fight or otherwise hurt his bill? Is he eating and drinking normally?
If it were me, for the time being I'd make sure he had super easy to eat food (in case his bill hurts) and possibly try either a poultice or salve of comfrey and/or calendula to help with the seeming bruise.
Hope someone else has some better answers for you and that your drake feels better!

Hi Heather!  Appreciate you taking the time to respond.  No changes (no improvement, nor worsening).  We moved them inside for the week just in case it had to do with frostbite and so we could watch him more closely.  He appears otherwise healthy, is in good spirits, and is eating & drinking normally.  He does not seem to be in any distress of any sort.  Lol, he actually seems to be enjoying being in the house and getting to watch us all more closely.  He has been super chatty and engaging with us more than normal.  Going to reach out to a neighbor and see if they have any insight.

Of course, just wish I had more helpful suggestions. I'm glad to hear that other than the spots on the bill he is doing well. Good call moving him inside in case the cold has something to do with it and so you can observe more. Sounds like being around y'all is good medicine for him! Hope your neighbor or someone can help!
