Hi,

I'm planing to grow some shiitake mushrooms in a fresh cut oak log. This will be my first foray in mushroom propogation. I understand its best to seal the inoculation points with wax. Before buying wax (especially paraffin wax which is a petroleum product) I though maybe I could use the excess tallow I have in my freezer. I would very much appreciate the input of anyone with experience on mushroom growing.

Some of you may wonder why I don't just use the tallow for better things, like cooking? I DO, but because I generally split steer with my siblings, and they have no interest in using the tallow, I have accumulated a significant surplus.

Thanks!

If the logs are outside I think the wildlife will love the idea, but probably not the mushrooms.
