I live in Maryland and want to begin raising chicks towards the end of August/first of September.  Has anyone had success raising chicks in the fall?

Yes, you absolutely can, and there are some advantages to doing so. Namely that they will start laying next spring. It's best to get them September/October because after that, the cold sets in and it gets harder to transition them away from heat.
