We are searching for organized, energetic Kitchen Interns to join our team at Lost Valley Education Center. Interns are responsible for assisting with food preparation, serving and proper storing of ingredients and meals. You should also help ensure that the kitchen and storage areas remain clean and sanitary at all times.

To be successful as a Kitchen Intern, you should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to multitask without sacrificing the quality in your work. Top-notch candidates will be able to perform well within a fast-paced environment.

About Us:
Lost Valley Educational Center (LVEC) and Ecovillage provides education for sustainable communities in topics such as permaculture, regenerative design, ecovillage design, natural building, and community development. The ecovillage at Lost Valley is both a demonstration site for the education center and a residential community. Founded in 1989, LVEC is one of the oldest permaculture sites and ecovillage in the U.S. with approximately 50 -60 people on the campus.

When you join our aspiring Ecovillage and Education Center for a 3-month immersive internship experience you can build lasting friendships with other caring, compassionate, and dedicated individuals. You will have a chance to participate in educational offerings and join community meetings so you can learn about our decision-making processes. Together we will cultivate the knowledge, skills and experience to help you successfully navigate community living while contributing to the creation of a socially and ecologically regenerative future.


Responsibilities of Kitchen Interns:
The washing, chopping, shredding and dicing of produce and other ingredients with a knife by hand or with the aid
of kitchen equipment.
The measuring and mixing of ingredients for subsequent use by the Lead Cook or for independent preparation under their direction. Assist with the preparing of condiments,
side dishes, soups and entrees as directed by Lead Cook.  
Use the utmost care, to avoid cross contamination, when handling potential food allergens or preparing specific allergen free food items.
Help to set up serving tables, label preparations, serve out food to guests, replenish items as needed and keep serving tables clean and presentable. Ensure meals go out on time.
Help to educate guests on how and what to compost. Instruct guests on how to use the self-wash sink station. Be confident and kind answering guest questions.
Packaging leftover food, for takeout, upon guests request.
Prepare, package and label lunches for transport on field trip days, in a timely manner, as directed by Lead Cook.
Cool, date, label and store prepped and prepared food, as well as meal leftovers, according to prescribed food handling safety regulations.
Help to wash all serving dishes and cooking equipment after each meal, Clean and sanitize all workstations and food serving areas after each meal.
Help to maintain clean and sanitary food storage areas in accordance with food safety regulations.
Assist with the monitoring of kitchen inventory and record  needed items on shopping-list and all food-waste in log.
Assist Kitchen Coordinator with stock rotation and the unloading of food and sundry deliveries.
Decommission and report all damaged or faulty kitchen equipment to the Kitchen Coordinator asap.
Compost kitchen produce, food waste and egg shells as prescribed by LVEC best practices.
Rinse and sort recyclable materials as prescribed by Lane County Waste Management
Properly dispose of non-recyclable, non-compostable or non-reusable refuse. Cleaning trash cans on a regular basis.
Sweep kitchen, walk-in and serving area floors at the end of each meal. Mop floors daily after the evening meal shift or as needed due to spills.

Skills/Experience:
·   Prior kitchen experience in a similar position or capacity.
·   Thorough knowledge of food handling and safety procedures.
·   Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
·   Must be confident and humble, driven, efficient, have a willingness to learn, have a sense of humor and be able to ask questions as needed.
·   Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
·   Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment.
·   Ability to stand for extended periods.
·   Dress code adheres to health & safety regulations

Schedule of Hours
June 1st - August 24th (There is some flexibility around arrival date provided you are able to complete a full orientation and begin no later than June 13th.)

Typically, Monday to Friday, twenty (15-20) hours per week
