Does anyone know if using steel frame is compatible with wattle and daub construction?
Our idea is to have the roof resting on steel frame and build the walls with wattle and daub. Our question is if it’s okay to ‘encase’ the steel pillars in mud mix? Would it reduce the integrity of the steel? Corrosion, rust etc?
As a civil Engineer who has worked with that combination I can say you will generally have no problems , but I have some questions and comments;
- What section steel are you using?
- Posts buried into the ground with concrete is easier.
- if its rolled steel sections as columns all exposed steel at the cuts needs to be coated with galvanitic primer.
- 3mm thick Square Hollow Section [ shs ] the loads are great and its best to coat exposed steel with galvanised primer.
- Will the columns [posts ] be buried into the ground or bolted to the foundation?
We plan to put the posts in the ground, using lime mortar. I’ve read that lime is alkaline so theoretically should be okay with steel. What do you think?
Not yet decided what section steel we’d use. But it seems what’s used locally here is the hollow center kind. We are okay to pay more for quality, if there’s better option.
Hola, here in Baja California Sur, we named the technique "vara trabada". When the structure you say, steel i proper protected with chromate zinc primer, would last at least 20 year. The botanical name is Tecoma Stans
