Peter Donovan to speak on Understanding the CARBON CYCLE: Nov. 30 & Dec. 1 Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA FREE

http://www.cfs.calpoly.edu/events/specialeventsdonovan.html

The importance of the carbon cycle in agriculture and in the sequestration of greenhouse gases is receiving increasing attention. The mother of all ˜ecosystem services, this natural process does 10 times the work of all industrial energy systems - and is deeply influenced by our decision making. Understanding of carbon cycling is fragmentary and typically oriented around solving problems such as energy supply, waste disposal, and climate.

"Understanding the

CARBON CYCLE"

What can we do to manage the whole, not just the parts? Peter Donovan of the Soil Carbon Coalition will be at Cal Poly on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 to speak to scientists and non-scientists, farmers and non-farmers, climate activists and climate skeptics alike. Peter tells the fascinating story of why and how carbon cycling was discovered, why the problem-solving orientation of most individuals and organizations camouflages the opportunity to manage wholes such as carbon or water cycling.

Fridays introductory lecture will take place from 4 - 6 pm on campus in Room 11-104.

A Saturday workshop will take place from 9 am - 3 pm at the Poultry Unit (brown bag lunch). Both are free and open to the permies. Stay tuned for details!

Peter Donovan has been establishing baseline measurements for soil carbon fluctuations with innovative land managers from Mexico to Canada as part of the Soil Carbon Challenge. More information on his work can be found at: www.soilcarboncoalition.org
