Art Ludwig suggests draining greywater into mulch basins. I'd imagine you wouldn't want these too close to the home's foundation. Any idea how far from the foundation they should be?

Hi Mike,
I have almost no experience with hydrology, but one thought comes to mind from people who do know what they are talking about. But mostly this is to bump this for you so someone who does know what they are talking about :)

When I was reading up on Olla's, I came across some research that suggested if the Olla was a 12" circle, it could water a 24" circle, and if the olla was a 6" circle, then it could water a 12" circle. Essentially it suggested the water would soak out half the width beyond the edge. I'm sure the soil type affects things as well as the slope of the ground where you are considering this. But based on that information, I would probably put it at least as far from the house as it is wide. If the pit is 3 feet wide, I would put it at least 3 feet from the house. In theory the water would soak out 1.5 feet past the edge, and there would be a 1.5 foot buffer. If the pit is 6 feet wide, I would put it at least 6 feet away.

girl power ... turns out to be about a hundred watts. But they seriously don't like being connected to the grid. Tiny ad:
