I LOVE the idea of hugelkultur and plan on starting several beds myself this spring but has anyone directly compared the productivity of their flatbed crops to their crops grown on hugelbeds?
This question does not take into consideration the ease of using this form of farming nor does it consider irrigation. Purely productivity.
Has anyone noticed a difference when making this switch?
I converted one of my regular raised garden beds to an hugelkultur one and thought that the hugel bed was in a better shape than the others ones: more productive, less pest, nicer growth.
You can have a look at this thread where I talk about it.
I am planning into converting the remaining beds. Well, except for one bed where I have a sumac that volunteered and I think it would be a shame to remove it from there, plus my garden could use some shade.
In my opinion hugelculture is far superior that flat beds for a number of reasons: increased growing area, less or no irrigation or fertilization, extended season, micro-climates etc. etc. The only downside is that they don't lend themselves to harvesting with large machines ( kinda a plus in my book).
