I'm in south FL, zone 10b, on a suburban lot. I am looking for ideas for a hedge planting on the east side of my property. I don't want the hedge to get too tall as to shade the plants to the west. The more narrow and dense the better, so as to block the drift (approximately 8-10 ft high) from my neighbors mosquito repellent spray without sacrificing too much square footage. Just to be safe, I'd prefer not to plant anything edible there (even if inedible skin). But I want to grow something that produces something for me. A lot of this part of my property is only 10' wide due to the location of my pool. Bamboo would be an example (though most useful varieties get too tall for my purposes). Wax myrtle also came to mind (candle making). Plants that have a use for crafts would be fine. I don't personally craft with plants at this time, but if I am going to plant a hedge anyway, I'd like for it to be something useful, even if it isn't useful to me at the time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you seen The 30 Most Valuable Plants for Urban and Suburban Yards from the late Toby Hemenway's website? He made this chart from one of his books available for free. I hope it helps your brainstorming process!

Thanks. I think the only suitable option I noted there is bamboo, which does interest me.
