We would like to build an outdoor kitchen in the front yard. We have ample fuel available from bulk trash week in our neighborhood - which comes once per month. The front yard is a desirable spot because it helps to connect with neighbors. Although we have an HOA, we don't anticipate this being a problem - it is a fairly minor and somewhat impotent HOA.

The area we have available might not be ideal, though, because it has a wall on 3 of the four sides. Our house is built in such a way that there is an atrium that is open to the street, but to the three other sides, there is a wall to our house. There is a wall to the south, west, and north (ish - not exactly in either case). The west is open. The atrium is maybe 15x15'. We are newbies to cooking with wood. We've only experimented with rocket stoves in the backyard. Would the smoke be a problem given suboptimal wind flow?

We aren't 100% sure about what wood powered appliances we will be constructing. A pizza/bread oven is highly likely. As is a stove of some type (perhaps metal drum). We are watching various youtube videos to see what people have constructed for ideas.

Thanks so much for any insights that you may have.

Hi Mike;
Outdoor kitchens are awesome!
Especially now that summer temps are so high in parts of the country.
Here is a link to our kitchen build  https://permies.com/t/164923/rocket-ovens/Build-Black-White-Rocket-Oven
You might get some ideas from it.

So Mike;
Show us some pictures or maybe a drawing of the location you are wanting to build on.

Sounds like a good plan! :)

You can see my home with the atrium (open to the west - north/west). Each square in the image is 2 feet.
If this looks like any okay area for this (not going to get lots of smoke built up due to lack of airflow) we will try to approximate having an oven and a 2 burner stove. The goal is to use reclaimed or natural materials.
