Guess which of these birds' nests was successful............
In a box in our woodshed:
Woodshed nest
In a pile of tyres next to the workshop door:
Nest in tyre stack
In a honeyberry bush in my 'orchard':
Nest in fruit bush

Despite the fact that the adjacent door is opened and used with vehicles going in and out every day, the only nest that succeeded in hatching and raising chicks this year was the starling nest in the tyre stack! Unfortunately I didn't notice the blackbirds' nest in the woodshed when I was tidying in there and obviously disturbed the parents. Also the (suspected robin?) nest in the honeyberry bush I didn't notice till after I had completed "chopping and dropping" the undergrowth. :(
I'm not sure how I can develop my observation skills to avoid disturbing birds in future. On a positive note, I'm happy that we have so many birds at least trying to nest now, a big improvement on a few years ago.
Just park a vehicle underneath the areas you want a nest in the spring, lol!
I always hate it. You basically have about one day to catch them making it and block them so they go somewhere more appropriate to build. I always see it and wonder when in the world they built that nest and check and sure enough, eggs. Well, gotta see it through now...

Well the starlings are back in their tyre stack. They obviously liked the site last year.
Also I think they are blackbirds that are back in the woodshed. Luckily I spotted the bird in a new nest in one of my kindling boxes when I was putting kindling in there today. Now we know they are back there, I can try not to disturb them.

You talk to them, asking them to help you notice them. Animals like to co-operate with us. It will also raise your level of watching out as you'll get sudden realisations.
I don't like that guy. The tiny ad agrees with me.
