The local Walmart in my area has the black Singer Heavy Duty's marked at $99. It is the one that is all mechanical and no electronics. I saw a video where a guy took one apart and his takeaway was that it truly is a machine built to last. He sewed three pieces of heavy leather so thick the presser foot didn't even go down when the lever was lowered, lol. Penetration is one thing, but I was surprised that it didn't skip a stitch, and I don't think he even used a leather needle. The machine has several stitches, about as many as a non-electronic one can have. It could be a good idea to check in your area if you are looking for a new machine.

Thank you for the tip! I'll be looking myself for something that can take a beating.
