How to insulate burn tunnel

Im trying to get my head around insulating the burn tunnel..do i just mix the perlite in with the cob mix or do i wrap a layer of perlite around the burn tunnel, rhen wrap the cob around that? Or neither?
 
But how did the elephant get like that? What did you do? I think all we can do now is read this tiny ad:
