This article is from the BLue Zones people.   Interesting statistics about how separated bike lanes even improves the safety of drivers in those cities.
Bikeability also improves the health and longevity of all people within those places.

I think you're right.  I think it's also people feeling tired and worn out, and thinking, "Oh, here's another thing you want me to do?" I think many don't realize that biking to shopping, work, the park, etc. leaves you feeling energized and refreshed, rather than tired.  To your point, if people start off young and slowly, they can gradually build their way up and save time.  When I bike to the library, it's a two-fer.   I got exercise and I got to the library.  Saved money? Three fer.   Avoided polluting? Four-fer.  Went somewhere fun with my wife/kids? Five-fer.   If you don't have a lot of time, bicycling to places can really help out. I just feel much happier arriving on a bike too.  The Blue Zones guy, Dan Buettner, always emphasizes that people in the blue zones don't take time out of their schedule to exercise. They exercise as a regular part of their life.  They bike, walk, chop wood, garden, do hand chores like permies do.
