Hey Permies family! 👋
I'm Babatunde Oladepo, and I’m thrilled to be part of this amazing community! 🌱
I’ve been raising chickens for a few years now, mostly focusing on organic, pasture-based systems. And trust me — it’s been one big, exciting adventure!
One thing that totally threw me when I started?
Figuring out how much feed I needed for my broilers.
I thought it would be simple — like, just feed them every day and that’s that, right? Nope! Turns out, planning your feed properly can make or break your organic chicken project, especially when you’re raising 50, 100, or even more birds.
My Real Experience Raising 100 Organic Broilers
When I raised my first batch of 100 organic broilers, I didn’t plan well at all.
Halfway through the grow-out, I ran short on feed... and wow, those birds let me know they were not happy! 😅
I had to scramble to find organic feed — at twice the normal price — just to keep them growing. Lesson learned!
Since then, I’ve gotten a lot better at calculating feed needs upfront.
Here’s the general idea based on what I’ve learned (and tested):
👉 For 100 broilers, you’re going to need somewhere between 12 and 14 bags of 50kg organic feed from start to finish.
👉 If you pasture them part-time and let them forage, you might shave off a bag or two.
👉 Weather matters too — in colder weather, they eat a bit more to stay warm!
If you want a full breakdown by week and bird weight, I just shared a detailed guide here:

It covers starter, grower, and finisher stages so you don’t get caught short like I did that first year. 😅
Tips for Saving Money on Organic Feed
Because organic feed can be expensive, here are a few things that worked for me:
✅ Pasture Whenever You Can: Letting chickens forage reduces feed costs and makes healthier, tastier birds.
✅ Ferment Your Feed: Fermenting organic feed boosts nutrition and can cut consumption by up to 20%! It’s easy, cheap, and the chickens love it.
✅ Buy in Bulk: If you can swing it, buy your feed in bulk early in the season. Prices usually go up when demand rises later!
✅ Grow Some of Your Own Feed: Simple crops like sunflowers, pumpkins, and amaranth can be great supplements.
