A few years ago my son helped me build what I call the chick wing. It's a 4'X4' addition on the coop that will keep the chicks safe until they are big enough to integrate with the flock. It's been wonderful.
I've had a lot of trouble with critters destroying my garden. I was talking to a coworker, wishing I could get a couple of good barn cats. He had a cat who's a great mousers that was about to have kittens. I agreed to take 2(I must be crazy! Kittens are not what I need) My nephew wanted a kitten, and they decided to get rid of the mom. So now I need a place to keep a cat and 3 kittens until it's safe, they get to know us.  And I can get mom fixed so I don't end up with more kittens than I need.
Yep the chick wing is now a nursery. It's actually working out quite well.
Now what do I do with the chicks that need to go out? I blocked off the back of the coop like I used to do before the chick wing. I was trying to figure out how to block it. I wanted to do it quick and cheap. My daughter got a new mattress. She removed all the padding, and topper to make dog beds. My son said I should use the spring frame. I thought he was crazy, but it actually works pretty well. We've gotten a lot of uses out of that old mattress.

Today I found an added bonus. As I was filling the chick water a couple got out of the bottom corner. I decided to leave the corner like that and sat with the cats.  I sit with the cats every day so they will get used to me. This way I could watch the chick and see how the older hens reacted. The opening wasn't big enough for the hens so if they became a little aggressive the chicks could dart back to safety.  A few of the hens chased the chicks back into their space, but considering they haven't been out there very long it's going well.  I will leave it for a while, maybe more each day, and remove it when I think it's safe.
