During an internship a few years ago, I had an assignment in which we had to design an experiment to address a practical problem in agriculture. My assigned area was "semi-arid," so I focused on the Sahel. I did a lit review and found that intercropping grains with certain trees and shrubs was often beneficial for various reasons (hydraulic redistribution, soil microbial communities in leaf litter, nutrients brought up from the soil and deposit via leaves on the ground, shade during dry season).

I recently remembered I wrote this paper, and it's just been sitting on a hard drive. In case it's useful to anyone, I've attached it here. I'm also cross-posting in other possibly relevant forums here on permies.

Thanks!
