Hello everyone. I have two old butter molds and one butter churn. The wood on all these has a rancid smell. Is there any way to make these tools usable again? Any and all help is appreciated.
Two possible treatments: (1) hot hydrogen peroxide solution (may bleach the color a little) or (2) big kettle type steamer and let it steam for 15 minutes (not good if there are any glue type joints).
And a third possible treatment: boil it in a lye solution. That will turn the butyric acid responsible for the rancid smell into a soap which will easily wash out.
