There is something to teaching yourselves in a community, too. If you want the contact info of some folks we know in WV with PDCs under their belts, let us know.
In my own case, the experience of taking a PDC and creating community from there was different from self-study as well as my 10+ years as an organic farmer. I think my wife Crystal (who is from WV) may say it best here:
http://weareallfarmers.org/?p=1896, in any case, about why a live PDC is useful.... but of course, there are other models.
We did a free two day workshop in WV in Sept (last weekend) and one also back in May.
There is a guy in Montgomery very excited about permaculture. Rock Lake is very excited... and folks in Mingo Co. also got some training back in March. There is also the Bramwell Permaculture Society...and the folks at the Patch Adams' Institute that may be implementing some permaculture.
PM me if you would like to be connected to some folks we know there.
Last but not least we see community and building community as key. We don't believe in the myth of American self-sufficiency or isolation; no one ever survived long without exchange with others. Our goal in the PDC is to create a vibrant hub of people in and connected to Rock Lake and to assist that site in becoming a blossoming urban permaculture site while giving people hands-on training and exposure to each other and 11+ practitioners. No reason to think your own self-teaching and this can't all co-exist in WV.
