Hi fellow Permies hope you are all well,
I was thinking about how to make more mainstream farms adopt Permaculture and it occurred to me perhaps the easiest transition would be in the livestock industry, an intensive grazing, paddock shift system (since this would help build topsoil) From other types of pasture grazing.
I then thought perhaps it would be possible to essentially "sell" the paddock shift system of Permaculture, to farmers who otherwise would not be open to permaculture under the disguise of more corporate lingo. The mainstream farmers are likely more open to economic terminology rather than ecological or Permacultural terminology so perhaps "Farm or Ranch Optimization" could be a term, which a design firm could use to at least get an audience with more curmudgeon like farmers.
Also maybe someone like Joel Salatin is doing this currently? I didn't find anything on a google search.
If we do take the idea of spreading Permaculture into mainstream farming on a broader scale, using the terminology already encoded in mainstream business society to market Permaculture, sort of like a Trojan horse might be an effective tool.
It kind of boiled down here to two questions:
In the name of infecting brains and affecting change is there any value in marketing certain aspects of Permaculture to someone currently farming, before trying to sell them on Permaculture in it's totality? (This one is murky since it involves some form of deception albeit for the benefit of the farmer and the earth)
Is marketing aspects of Permaculture systems to otherwise resistant markets at all possible in your opinion, specifically in the case of grazing animals and intensive paddock shift?
I know this kind of thinking goes against what many Permaculture folks would say to do, which is wait for those interested to discover Permaculture.... but I went there anyway.
*edit* Also the point in the end would be to explain that this one system is just a part of the broader Permaculture tool book and get them interested after seeing actual tangible gains.
What do you guys think? Am I totally crazy?
Thanks Everyone,
Daniel
