I just started working on my community garden plot today!
It's not large, about 5'x10', but has a bit of slope. The top of the slope was used in the garden last year, so the topsoil is several inches deep, but the soil at the bottom is a shallow layer of mulch on top of clay. So of course, I put in mini-swales to rehydrate the lower slope.
Additionally, I planted my fig tree that spent the last year not getting enough light on my patio. It's potted in a 5-gallon bucket, and since I have to be very concerned about shading out my neighbors, I dug a hole and buried the whole thing still inside the bucket. The goal here is that the restricted root zone will keep the canopy fairly small. I'll also do some summer pruning if it becomes necessary. As a nitrogen fixer, I also put a few pea seeds in the bucket with the tree, so hopefully that will address some of the limitations I've put on the tree.
The back of the plot is up against a fence, so I put some peas, indeterminate tomatoes, and cucumbers to climb the fence. Otherwise, I just broadcast lots of different seed types and covered the whole thing with mulch to prevent the birds from taking all the seed.
